The Pet Market
As it is about time I write another entry to this blog I thought I tell you a little bit about the pet market in Chengdu. We had been in China for almost a year when we first got here and I have to say it almost was culture shock all over, especially as in most western countries animal rights seem almost more important that human rights. Well animal rights activists would have had a field day here.
The puppy on this photos is really not that bad off compared to some of the other animals we came across. I saw a cage, about the same size as on the photo, with about 10 kittens in. Rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs and tortoises were no exception either, and I even came across a cage full of some sort of squirrels.
When we bought our guinea pigs here I had to do some real good reading up on how to determine their gender and how to check whether they were healthy or not. In the end we ended up with two healthy guinea pigs, but it was a little bit of a gamble.
Well I presume the moral of the story is that if you ever want to go into culture shock, come and visit a Chinese pet market.
